Learn about AL SETTON’s journey, style, and creative vision.

My painting is colorful, joyful, and energetic, and reflects my roots growing up near the Mediterranean Sea. I am now working with watercolor and acrylic on paper in a relatively large format, visually recording my emotional responses to things that engage me. High contrast and lively relationships of shapes, color harmonies, and calligraphic strokes are characteristic of my current work. I have recently been relying on symbols to convey meanings that are otherwise difficult to depict.
I approach the act of painting with an idea or feeling that takes off and is led by the actual process of creating it. One thing leads to another; accidents along the way are incorporated and become part of the finished piece. I function from a place of playful spontaneity, taking pleasure in the application of the art materials, which produces a freshness and openness in my work that I hope will remind you of enjoyable times in your own life.
My artistic journey is self-directed. I pursued formal training at the California Art Institute and have selectively attended workshops and seminars with prominent artists of my choosing. I have extracted insights from an eclectic group of very different artists whose unique achievements contributed to my artistic vision. Among many others, they include Henri Matisse, Paul Cézanne, Robert Motherwell, Francis Bacon, Manuel Neri, and Wayne Thiebaud. Each overcame obstacles in their paths to produce memorable works. I strive to achieve the same.
I feel fortunate to have been the recipient of numerous awards at local, national, and international shows and am pleased to have exhibited widely. My work hangs in public and private collections.
I enjoy writing about art and have been published on a number of occasions. Click here to read some of my thoughts on the subject. I am also fond of teaching and have done numerous workshops and demonstrations.
